Did you know?

I am a trivia buff; I have been since I was a child. I have not fact checked these, but it was interesting to read them when they came in my mailbox the other day as part of an Internet chain mail (but since I found them on the Internet, there's no need to fact check them anyway, eh?!) :-)

'Stewardesses' is the longest word typed with only the left hand And 'lollipop' is the longest word typed with your right hand.

No word in the English language rhymes with month, orange, silver, or purple.

'Dreamt' is the only English word that ends in the letters 'mt'.

Our eyes are always the same size from birth, but our nose and ears never stop growing.

The sentence:'The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog' uses every letter of the alphabet.

The words 'racecar,' 'kayak' and 'level' are the same whether they are read left to right or right to left (palindromes).

There are only four words in the English language which end in 'dous': tremendous, horrendous, stupendous, and hazardous.

There are two words in the English language that have all five vowels in order: 'abstemious' and 'facetious.'

TYPEWRITER is the longest word that can be made using the letters only on one row of the keyboard.

A cat has 32 muscles in each ear.

A goldfish has a memory span of three seconds.

A 'jiffy' is an actual unit of time for 1/100th of a second.

A shark is the only fish that can blink with both eyes.

A snail can sleep for three years.

Almonds are a member of the peach family.

An ostrich's eye is bigger than its brain.

Babies are born without kneecaps. They don't appear until the child reaches 2 to 6 years of age.

February 1865 is the only month in recorded history not to have a full moon.

In the last 4,000 years, no new animals have been domesticated.

If the population of China walked past you, 8 abreast, the line would never end because of the rate of reproduction.

Leonardo Da Vinci invented the scissors

Peanuts are one of the ingredients of dynamite!

Rubber bands last longer when refrigerated.

The average person's left hand does 56% of the typing.

The cruise liner, QE 2 moves only six inches for each gallon of diesel that it burns.

The microwave was invented after a researcher walked by a radar tube and a chocolate bar melted in his pocket.

The winter of 1932 was so cold that Niagara Falls froze completely solid.

There are more chickens than people in the world.

Winston Churchill was born in a ladies' room during a dance.

Women blink nearly twice as much as men.

Insightful?

Do people in California or New York search for "Green Energy" more? Are Japanese or Australians more interested in "Legos?" Now you can find out.

Google's Insights site allows you to plug in a search term and get a numerical and graphical representation of the geographical sources of those queries. Just another (questionably) useful site that shows how much information Google really hoards. :-

Sand Art

Remember the tiny bottles of colored sand you made at the state fairs years ago ( or last summer)? Welcome to Sand Art 2.0! The This is Sand site allows you to create much larger masterpieces -- no bottles needed!

You choose the color (click the little box in the upper left corner) and then start pouring. If you're really creative, you can create works of art like this. Or you can end up with a bunch of layers of different colors of sand all stacked on top of one another -- like mine.

Not just for books anymore!

Bookshelves used to be places to organize your books (magazines, knick knacks, etc), but now they've become art!

Home Interiors Zone has collected a couple of sets of interesting contemporary "art pieces that are designed to be used to store books." Have a look at both set 1 and set 2

My Sauder screw and nail together, paper laminated, four-shelf chunks certainly don't compare to these works of art! :-(

Somewhere over the rainbow

CNN (courtesy of Mental Floss) had an interesting piece the other day about the origins of some famous (and not so famous) Muppets. It's interesting to realize the humble beginning of these creatures that have come to be so dear to our hearts.

These stuffed-felt animals are fun for "kids" of all ages.

Watch your cursor!

Self Control Freak has several interactive videos that actually interact with your cursor. Kinda of a cool effect.

Depending on where you place your cursor on top of the image, the video reacts differently. Everything from catching your cursor and eating it, to smacking it away, to a few more crude clips.

Silent Treatment

A man and his wife were having some problems at home and were giving each other the silent treatment. Suddenly, the man realized that the next day, he would need his wife to wake him at 5:00 AM for an early morning business flight. Not wanting to be the first to break the silence (and LOSE), he wrote on a piece of paper,‘Please wake me at 5:00 AM .’ He left it where he knew she would find it. The next morning, the man woke up, only to discover it was 9:00 AM and he had missed his flight Furious, he was about to go and see why his wife hadn’t wakened him, when he noticed a piece of paper by the bed. The paper said, ‘It is 5:00 AM . Wake up.’
Men are not equipped for these kinds of contests.

Walmart expansion

It's been said there's a Walmart in every small town. Well, there must be more small towns than I thought! This Flowing Data page shows the expansion of Walmart across the country since it's inception. It kinda looks like something growing in a petri dish :-)
